Heat & Cool Efficiently

Use a programmable thermostat.  In the summer, raise the thermostat two degrees.  In the winter, lower it two degrees.  Change the air filter regularly.

Switch to Engery Efficient Lighting

Use compact flourescent lightbulbs.  They use 75% less energy than standard bulbs and last up to 10 times longer!

Seal & Insulate

Sealing air leaks and adding insulation are do-it-yourself projects that save you money.  Note: the biggest air leaks are usually found in the attic.

Use Water Efficiently

Water the lawn only when needed and water during the coolest part of the day.  Turn the water off while shaving or brushing your teeth.  Fix leaky faucets or toilets – those leaks can waste 200 gallons of water a day!

Summer is a great time of year with vacations, picnics, swimming, bike riding and other sports.  With all that fun, it’s easy to forget about safety.  Although the sun is bright, warm and comforting, it is also damaging.  Too much time in the sun can cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke, eye damage or cataracts and skin cancer.

Remember some simple tips to protect yourself this summer:

• The sun is strongest between 10 am – 4 pm.  Spend less time outside during these hours.
• Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher and one that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.  Cover all exposed areas!
• Wear lip balm to protect your lips.
• Wear a hat to protect your head and face.
• Wear sunglasses that block UV rays.
• Wear light, loose-fitting clothes.
• Take breaks in the shade to cool your body temperature.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.  Drink before you feel thirsty!

Remember, these are only tips.  Please consult a medical professional with specific questions about sun safety.  Be safe and have fun this summer!
