Northwest Independent School District is located in the northwestern area of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex, serving parts of Denton, Tarrant and Wise counties. The 234 square miles in the district encompass at least portions of 17 cities and towns. More than 19,000 students attend school on 27 campuses in 2014. More than 50 active housing communities contribute to the projected 95,000 students in the next decade, making it the second fastest-growing school district in the state. The district employs 2,052 people including professional and support staff.

Northwest ISD: A Brief History

In 1948, the citizens of several communities met to determine the future of educational programs for their children. They determined that a consolidation program would bring strength to all of their schools. In a matter of days, their proposal reached the State Department of Education with the full support of the citizens and the professional leadership from each. Mr. Terrell Trimble of that body approved the proposal, assuring the steering committee that they had the support of the agency. In a special election held in December, the measure passed almost unanimously. Two more communities voted to join the consolidation in January of 1949. In July, voters approved a bond issue to fund construction of a new school, Northwest High School. These actions were the beginnings of the joint effort between communities that continues today.
