5 Trim Ideas That Will Dress Up Your Home

Is one of your 2016 New Year’s Resolutions to spice up the kitchen or bring more a more formal feel to your living room? Here are five trim ideas that can finish a room and give the room a more polished feel.

Crown Molding

Found in both simple and ornate designs, this decorative trim helps a room  feel finished. Furthermore it adds style and height to a room. Though it can be tricky at first for the beginner DIYer, adding crown molding can provide visual interest to an otherwise uninteresting room as well as add value to your home.

Wainscoting

Extending from the floor partway up the wall, wainscoting is made up of boards or paneling and is often paired with molding. Though it was originally added to rooms that received a lot of wear and tear like kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms, wainscoting is now associated with a more formal look and can be installed by an experienced handyman. Wood is traditionally used for wainscoting, but other materials are also becoming popular.

Chair Rails

This type of trim is applied horizontally around the walls of a room at about one-third of the room’s height. Chair rails are also used to create visually pleasing proportions.

Ceiling Medallions

Used to feature a hanging light feature, these decorative disks can be found in dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms. Ceiling Medallions give a sense of class and elegance to a room. Most noteworthy, they come in a variety of sizes and styles and relatively simple to install.

Faux Ceiling Beams

Finally, add some rustic chic charm to your home with exposed structural beams. DIY for a portion of the cost and work of the real thing! Faux ceiling beams are available in a variety of materials. However, be prepared to have some help installing the beams because of the weight and safety issues that come with them.
