State of Texas Eliminates Annual Vehicle Safety Inspections header image.

As of January 1st, Texas drivers no longer need annual safety inspections to register their vehicles. However, emissions tests will still be required in major metropolitan areas, including Tarrant County, and all drivers must pay a $7.50 inspection replacement fee when renewing registration. The policy change, led by Rep. Cody Harris, was approved during the 2023 legislative session as part of a new state law, House Bill 3297, which eliminates mandatory safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles and aims to modernize state requirements.
